Introduction
Many students dream of becoming doctors from their school days. But entering this profession is not easy. To become a doctor, one needs to get admission to a medical college and earn an MBBS degree. However, getting a seat in a medical college is very competitive. The main exam that determines admission is NEET-UG, which is conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency).
What is NEET UG?
NEET UG stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduates. It is an exam that is held once a year to select candidates for MBBS/BDS/BAMS courses in India. Every year, around 18 to 20 lakh students appear for this exam.
The admission is based on the merit list that is prepared according to the marks obtained in NEET UG. The merit list has different categories for general/OBC/SC/ST/PWD quota on both national and state levels. NEET UG does not affect the management quota in private medical and dental colleges.
Eligibility for NEET UG
To be eligible for NEET UG, candidates must:
- Pass class 12th examination with an aggregate of 50% in biology, chemistry, and physics subjects (for the general category).
- Score 40% in biology, chemistry, and physics (for OBC/ST/SC category) or 45% (for PWD category).
- Complete 17 years of age at the time of admission or by 31st December in the first year of the UG course.
- Be an Indian citizen/PIO/OCI/NRIs.
There is no restriction for upper age limit or number of attempts for NEET UG.
NEET UG Exam Pattern
The exam consists of four sections: physics, chemistry, zoology, and botany. Each section has two parts: A and B. Part A has 35 questions and Part B has 15 questions. Candidates need to attempt any 10 questions from part B. The total number of questions is 180 and the duration of the exam is three hours.
The exam is conducted in offline mode on pen and paper. A ballpoint pen is provided at the center. Tampering with the OMR sheet can result in a three-year debarring.
Marking Scheme for NEET UG
Each question has four options and only one option is correct. For each correct answer, +4 marks are awarded. For each incorrect answer, a -1 mark is deducted. If a question is left unanswered, a zero mark is given.
If more than one option is correct for a question, then +4 marks are awarded only if the correct option is chosen. If a question is incorrect or dropped, then +4 marks are awarded to all the candidates who attempted the question.
Medium of Question Paper for NEET UG
The question paper is available in 11 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Candidates can choose the language of their preference while filling out the application form. However, the English version of the question paper will be considered as the final authority in case of any discrepancy.
